Medical error is the third leading cause of death and up to 12% of this is due to inappropriate application of force. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is increasingly replacing traditional open surgery and now represents 67% of general surgery procedures. However, accurately judging force in MIS is difficult because the surgeon now operates with much longer instruments from outside the body. SensOR Medical is a medical device company focused on both improving surgical safety in MIS and, enabling new procedures. SensOR’s Force-Sensing Film can be applied to any make or model of rigid endoscopic instruments to give surgeons a digital “sense of touch”. This force-sensing technology will help reduce adverse events in surgery, as well as accelerate surgical training, through providing real-time feedback without affecting the existing surgical or hospital workflow.
